The Covers: Honorable Mention

For a time, this was the most important song in my life:

EDIT: Yes...this is a cover. The song was originally by Khaled, but the genius above covered a version by Outlandish. See below.

Re: Allison's Cover Songs

Oh, I'm sorry. I was under the impression we were putting together an "ultimate" playlist, not a "best of indie/newwave/shoegaze" playlist. Please ignore my attempt to cover different genres (although I've been clearly neglecting world music and christian death metal) and decades. From now on, I will try my best to be more narrow-minded about my choices and include more hyperbole in my assessments.

That said, I think we need to clarify what we're doing here. We're making a playlist that both you and I would love. I have no problem with that, but let's try not to be misleading about making an "ultimate" playlist because any "ultimate covers playlist" without All Along the Watchtower is ridiculous. It'd be like having a "greatest countries ever" list compiled by a bunch of euro-tards that excludes America.

Ok enough of the preachy shit. Here's my take on your songs, and which ones I'd like to have on our "favorite" covers list:

HELL YES!

+ Ted Leo - Dirty Old Town - 2:47
I'd never heard him cover this, and it's fantastic. I could've done without the first 40 seconds of him talking, though. There are two reasons I never became a musician. First, as this video reinforces, I don't have enough self-confidence to fill time between songs with awful, useless banter. Second, I'm not good enough, but that's neither here nor there.

+ The Last Town Chorus - Modern Love - 4:27
Wow. I couldn't believe I was listening to Modern Love. Although skeptical at first, this is one of those slowed-down covers that doesn't turn out to be a total bore fest.

+ She & Him - You Really Got a Hold On Me - 3:59
You're totally exploiting the fact that I'm in love with both of them. I'd never go so far as to say they're overrated, or that they're a guilty pleasure, but they're not mind-blowingly good, either. If this were an "ultimate cover" playlist, this would probably be a "Hell No." Clearly it's not, so let's throw it on there!

+ Iron & Wine - Such Great Heights - 4:13
Two Postal Service songs on one list? God we're awful.

+ Jimmy Eat World - Spangle - 4:38
Oh man...whoever overlayed this with the ROA scene is a genius. I can't believe we both missed this one for The Saddest Songs.

+ Get Up Kids - Alex Eiffel - 3:02
Great pick.

+ Youth Group - Forever Young (4:30)
Damn this is such a perfect example of paying homage to the original in an epic way.

MEH

+/- Editors - Orange Crush - 4:17
Probably the best one not included above.

+/- Owen - Femme Fatale - 3:35
He's great. This cover is mediocre.

+/- Galaxie 500 - Ceremony - 5:57
I'm kinda surprised you put this on here. Joy Division is one of your favorite bands, and this cover doesn't even touch the original, so I figured you'd hate this. I'll agree on The Killers Shadowplay totally blowing, though.

+/- Ben Folds Five - She Don't Use Jelly - 4:11
This is a very good cover, but I think the Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright cover of Careless Whisper is his best.

+/- Mates of State - These Days - 3:33
Pretty cool. I like Nico and Jackson Browne's versions more.

+/- The Futureheads - Hounds of Love - 3:03
Can't tell if I like this yet. That means I don't hate it, but I certainly don't feel a whole ton of joy listening. Joy must've been what they were aiming for, with their cheeky "oh oh oh's" and cute puppy playshit. I'd probably be happy if I weren't sweating my balls off in my apartment.

HELL NO!

- Sun Kill Moon - The Ocean Breathes Salty - 4:33
Remember what I said about The Last Town Chorus' Modern Love slowing it down and not being totally fucking boring? That was win, this is fail.

- Jim Sturgess - I've Just Seen a Face - 1:51
Hmmmmmmmmmmm no. Don't get me wrong, I'm also one of the few people who loved Across the Universe, but this one is more about the scene than it is about the song. Without the scene, the song falls flat. Also, as far as Beatles covers go, it's no good.

- The Shins - We Will Become Silhouettes - 3:01
You really love the Such Great Heights EP, huh? There was one summer where I totally played Give Up and two of the Postal Service EPs to death (this and District Sleeps Alone Tonight), so I have a good handle on the comparisons. The original We Will Become Silhouettes and Nothing Better are my two favorite Postal Service songs, and the Shins cover does absolutely nothing for me.

- Mandy Moore - Drop the Pilot - 3:43
Hahahahahaha good one, Allison.

- LCD Soundsystem - No Love Lost - 3:40
I don't get it with LCD Soundsystem. They seem like one of those bands that people love because Pitchfork or some douche music snob told them to. I don't like this cover, I don't really like their music, so don't try to convince me otherwise.

Love,
Evan

And another thing, Killers...

O. M. G.

Kudos to my friend Rob for pointing this out to me. INCREDIBLE.

Re: Evan's Cover Songs

Here goes nothing... I worry about the state of mine and Evan's relationship after he reads this...

Unanimous YES (on both lists):
The Postal Service - Against All Odds (4:13)

I agree with you on...
+ Bruce Springsteen - War (3:04)
I'm not a Springsteen fan. I see the appeal and understand why so many people (including some of my closest friends) regard him as what they regard him as. This is a poignant and timely cover, and it demonstrates how a cover song can give something new meaning and new power when coveted.

+ Cat Power - Don't Explain (4:19)
I don't listen to much Cat Power. In fact, as I type this, I'm attempting to download some Cat Power, because this cover just convinced me that I'm missing out on something wonderful. I also appreciate artists that take the time to curate excellent cover albums, and this seems to be one thing Cat Power is known for.

+David Hasselhoff - Hooked on a Feeling (3:36)
YES. Evan, you are a genius. Thank you for being in my life and giving me this.

+ New Found Glory - The Power of Love (3:19)
Sure, they may have taken the cover song too far. They've done it too much - it's nearing comedic and registering on a band that isn't taking anything seriously. But even a band like New Found Glory can hit on the perfect cover song. They should have covered this and stuck to all originals from there on out. Because this is a home run.

+ Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (6:54)
It was not on my list! I tricked you into putting it on yours so I wouldn't have to waste nearly seven minutes on mine! I WIN. Anyhow. Yes. I love this song. It's a beautiful cover of Leonard Cohen.

I need some convincing on...
+/- Elvis Costello - Tomorrow's Just Another Day (2:52)
You're a little right in wondering if this an be considered a cover. I don't know. I just don't see it working as a full-on cover.

+/- Me First & the Gimmie Gimmies - I Believe I Can Fly (3:00)
I think I was expecting a lot more from this cover! I'd never heard it before and I was a little let down by it. I'd rather listen to the R. Kelly version. But considering the onslaught I'm about to unleash with my "Absolutely Nots," I'll put this in the purgatory column.

+/- Dynamite Hack - Boyz in the Hood (3:05)
This is a +/- track, but I'm leaning more toward the +. Taking an Eazy-E song and making it sound nice and poppy must have been a challenge? At least I want to listen to it now. (Sorry. Not the biggest rap fan you'll ever meet!)

+/- Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife (3:06)
I'm sick of "Mack the Knife." I think I hated this song immediately upon hearing it in my middle school music class. But I like Bobby Darin. So: I'm torn.

+/- William Shatner - Rocketman (4:53)
DUDE: COMMON PEOPLE IS LIGHTYEARS BETTER THAN THIS NONSENSE.

Absolutely not...
[Evan: Did you take a class called "Everything That Allison Hates" before coming up with this list? I'm sorry for what is about to happen, but it feels like you climbed inside of the darkest corners of my psyche and picked songs and styles I really really really HATE. WTF, man?!]

- 7 Seconds - 99 Red Balloons (3:40)
How is this version any different from the Goldfinger version? It sounds almost the same. I don't like this cover. It was boring. I think 99 Red Balloons is hard to cover well. No dice on this 7 Seconds track.

- John Coltrane - My Favorite Things (13:40)
Thirteen minutes and forty seconds of excruciating pain. I hate jazz. This is true. What is also true is the amount of contempt I have for "MY FAVORITE THINGS." I think it's one of the most obnoxious songs of all time. I may as well be stuck in an elevator on my way to a dentist's appointment where the dentist is going to rip all of my teeth out of my head. That is what trying to make it through this entire cover is like for me. No way. No how. Mandy Moore is not worth this kind of pain.

- Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground (3:22)
UGH. UGH. UGH. UGH. When this comes on the radio, I want to impale myself in the face with sharp objects. I think RHCP is like DMB: We all had a phase. The smarter ones realized it was a phase and went running for the hills. I RAN. I RAN SO FAR AWAY.

- Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (4:02)
I cant stand this song. It drives me crazy. In a bad way. I hope no one covers it again too, Evan. Less chances for me to have to listen to it ever.

- Warren Zevon - Knockin' on Heaven's Door (4:05)
He could have recorded this in a coffin in an open gravesite and it wouldn't make me think that "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" isn't one of the most boring songs I've ever heard. Seriously: NAP TIME.

- Give Up the Ghost - Kick Out the Jams (2:46)
No. Just, no.

I can't find the Joel Mazeika track, which I suspect is someone Evan went to high school with? I don't think it can qualify?

I'm sorry to be so harsh. I just couldn't believe how many things I hated on your list!! I still love you, Evan! Be my friend still! Rip Mandy a new one - it's cool! I'll survive.

Allison's Cover Songs

Wow.

Wow.

I expected our lists to overlap A LOT more... This is going to be interesting.

I love covers. And I don't think I could be any more eloquent than Evan was in his post about the nature of covers. So, I just have my list. I'll also post YouTube videos when I can find them. Some of these might be harder to track down than those we listed for The Saddest Songs.

I like to call mine: Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Too!
1. The Shins - We Will Become Silhouettes - 3:01
(original by The Postal Service)
The Shins version of this song made it impossible for me to listen to the original version. It sounds like a song The Shins should have written. Their more organic cover trumps the bippidy-boppidy original, which now sounds like too too much for a song so simply fantastic.

2. Jim Sturgess - I've Just Seen a Face - 1:51
(original by The Beatles)
I might be one of the only people on the planet who will admit to loving Across the Universe. A musical based on Beatles songs used to tell the story of the tumultuous '60s? Hmmmm. Okay, throw in one of the cutest Brits I've ever seen and have him sing this song in a bowling alley... Now we're talking! I can't help but sing along when it comes on.

3. Ted Leo - Dirty Old Town - 2:47
(original by The Dubliners)
Just a straight-up cover of "Dirty Old Town" with a lot more rock-edge. It's incredible to me what one guy and one electric guitar can do on stage. Ted Leo is the king of awesome covers in my mind: I had to fight with myself about which one to include. Special mentions go to "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" (original by Split Enz) and "Maps/Since U Been Gone" (originals by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Kelly Clarkson).
The video is a live version, but the one I like is on Tell Balgeary, Balgury is Dead.

4. She & Him - You Really Got a Hold On Me - 3:59
(original by The Miracles)
Oh that Zooey. Cute as a button. There's no way that this cover is better than the original, but it's so earnest and honest that I have to include it.
(Again, this is live, not the album version.)

5. Owen - Femme Fatale - 3:35
(original by The Velvet Underground)
Here's a simple equation for you to consider:
Owen (Allison's idea of Perfect Boy) + a song about Edie Sedgwick (Allison's idea of Perfect Girl) = Perfection. I nearly crapped my pants the first time I heard this cover. Could the world align any more perfectly for me?
(Live again - on the album At Home with Owen.)

6. The Last Town Chorus - Modern Love - 4:27
(original by David Bowie)
I first heard this cover live when The Last Town Chorus opened for The Weakerthans in Boston. She took a dance-your-face-off song (and one I had danced my face off to just two nights prior to hearing her version) and made it hauntingly beautiful. Oh - and she gets mega bonus points for having been born and raised in Pittsburgh.

7. Sun Kil Moon - The Ocean Breathes Salty - 4:33
(original by Modest Mouse)
I've always been "eh" when it comes to Modest Mouse. I like a handful of their tunes, but that's the extent. Like The Shins above, Sun Kil Moon totally killed any chance the Modest Mouse version of "The Ocean Breathes Salty" ever had of being listened to by me again. (WHEW - that sentence! Intense.)

8. Iron & Wine - Such Great Heights - 4:13
(original by The Postal Service)
Poor Postal Service... (Well, not exactly - see below to #11.) This is just hands-down better than the original. It's perfect. The original is still good; Iron & Wine did nothing to ruin it for me. But this version makes a little more sense.

9. Galaxie 500 - Ceremony - 5:57
(original by Joy Division/New Order)
"Ceremony" is one of my favorite songs of all time. I get super nervous when I see a band try to cover a Joy Division song, because I think it's pretty impossible to do Ian Curtis any justice (see: The Killers AWFUL take on "Shadowplay"). But Galaxie 500 does a nice job here.
This is a live version. You can find the track on the album On Fire. As an added bonus (?) I'll include The Killers version. WARNING: IF YOU HAVE ANY AFFINITY FOR JOY DIVISION, THIS IS GOING TO MAKE YOU WANT TO JUMP OFF A BRIDGE. BUT, I GUESS IF YOU HAVE THAT AFFINITY FOR JOY DIVISION, YOU MIGHT ALREADY HAVE BRIDGE-JUMPING TENDENCIES.

This is also not the real video for the song. If you want to see something that will truly make you vom in your mouth, search for "The Killers Shadowplay" on YouTube and watch the first video. The idea that the members of Joy Division would sit down to watch The Killers butcher one of their best tracks makes my stomach churn.

10. Jimmy Eat World - Spangle - 4:38
(original by The Wedding Present)
I don't know why I wasn't thinking of this song for The Saddest Songs mix. This is quite the sad song. It's the only track on Singles that I ever listen to. I think it was a sign of what direction Jimmy Eat World was going to go in with Clarity. I heard the JEW version before The Wedding Present one. I do not like The Wedding Present one. Nicely done, JEW.
I can't find a video for this whole song, but this one overlays "Spangle" with the suicide scene in The Rules of Attraction. Fitting. Find it on Singles.

11. The Postal Service - Against All Odds - 3:50
(original by Phil Collins)
A great Phil Collins song. (All Phil Collins songs are great. Life lesson!) A fine cover by a group I keep shafting by adoring the covers of their songs. I approve. (And I like it when it kicks in around 1:22.)

12. Mandy Moore - Drop the Pilot - 3:43
(original by Joan Armatrading)
Because when else am I going to be able to put a Mandy Moore song on a mix? She's my guiltiest of pleasures! She did a whole album of covers a few years ago, and this was definitely my favorite. (Warning to Evan: You want the jazz cover included? You better believe this is my greatest bargaining chip.)

13. Ben Folds Five - She Don't Use Jelly - 4:11
(original by The Flaming Lips)
Nothing much to say here, just a fun cover of an already fun song.

14. The Get Up Kids - Alec Eiffel - 3:02
(original by The Pixies)
Again, good cover of an already good song. I can't find a video for it, so you'll have to find it on Eudora.

15. The Futureheads - Hounds of Love - 3:03
(original by Kate Bush)
I probably listened to this Futureheads record a dozen times before I realized this was a cover of KATE BUSH. Talk about a complete 180! Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh! I'll include the Kate Bush version for hilarious comparison's sake.

16. Mates of State - These Days - 3:33
(original by Nico)
This song is amazing. Whether it's Nico's version or Mates of States', it's such a great song. I love their take on it.

17. Editors - Orange Crush - 4:17
(original by REM)
This is just a solid cover. People think the singer for The Editors sounds like Michael Stipe. I'd like to think they recorded this to disprove that theory.

18. LCD Soundsystem - No Love Lost - 3:40
(original by Joy Division)
Similar to the Galaxie 500 cover of Ceremony, LCD Soundsystem does justice to "No Love Lost." KILLERS: ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS? IT'S CALLED HOW NOT TO RUIN THINGS. (This is a live version, and it's pretty crappy. The album version = much better.)

19. Youth Group - Forever Young - 4:30
(original by Alphaville)
If The OC did nothing else, it provided me with this cover of "Forever Young." (And Adam Brody.)

What I know: This is going to be an epic battle. Our lists are pretty much polar opposites. Here goes nothing!

Evan's Cover Songs

Contrary to popular belief, the cover song wasn't invented by American Idol or Fearless Records. In fact, the past decade or so has done as much harm to the cover song as it has done good, if not more. Some people just don't have what it takes to make a cover, but YouTube and the aforementioned Fox karaoke show have provided far too many musically retarded individuals a stage where they can butcher classics. I miss the good old days where these people were confined to high school talent shows and battle of the bands...es.

People have been covering songs almost as long as they've been writing them. Most orchestras and concert pianists are pretty much highly-gifted cover artists. Many jazz and blues musicians, too (although with a bit more variance). There aren't many musicians out there who haven't performed a cover song in their career, and that's perfectly fine by me. Some musicians are unbelievable writers (i.e. Dylan), and some are brilliant performers (i.e. Hendrix). When the two come together, it usually leads to some pretty excellent music.

There is no mold for the ultimate cover song. Some seem like they're written for the cover artist herself, some pay homage to the original in an epic/ironic/hilarious way, and some are completely dismantled and put back together brilliantly. In a world full of shitty covers, it's difficult to find these gems. I'll do my best. Here goes:

1. bruce springsteen – war (edwin starr) (3:04)
growing up listening to the boss, i always knew that he did a kick-ass version of this song. it wasn’t until i saw him open with this in 2003 that i realized how timeless and poignant this song really is. his brutally desperate delivery brings the song to life in a way that can’t be replicated in a studio. still, the live recording makes a perfect first track on almost any playlist.

2. give up the ghost – kick out the jams (mc5) (2:48)
some people would say it's a no-no to put two awesomely intense intro songs back-to-back on a mix, but i'm not like most people, and that's probably the only thing about me that i like*

3. elvis costello - tomorrow's just another day (madness) (2:52)
this is as much a collaboration as it is a cover, but considering this was first released as a madness single without costello, and the version featuring him is a fundamentally different approach to the song, this can still be considered a cover. maybe i’m cheating, but this song is awesome

4. 7 seconds - 99 red balloons (nena) (3:40)
you can take that goldfinger cover and stick it directly up your ass.

5. cat power - don't explain (billie holiday) (4:19)
chan has a few great covers, but this one really sticks out for me. i usually cringe when people say they’re going to cover an artist of billie holiday’s stature, but chan pulls it off. she’s hot, too.

6. john coltrane - my favorite things (rodgers & hammerstein) (13:40)
everyone has their flaws. for example, allison hates jazz. i can't wait for her reasoning as to why one of the most inventive covers by one of the greatest musicians of all time doesn't deserve to be on this list. i axed 3 other excellent covers to fit this epic on my list.

7. red hot chili peppers - higher ground (stevie wonder) (3:22)
i didn't really learn about/listen to stevie wonder until the late 90s. i first heard higher ground not long after blood sugar sex magic came out (and i subsequently checked out mothers milk). no offense to stevie, but the chili peppers nail this in a way that almost no one else can. it will always be a RHCP song for me.

8. me first and the gimme gimmes - i believe i can fly (r kelly) (3:00)
they've made a career out of covering music, and somehow they don't totally suck. i wish i could say that for pretty much any guy i've seen with a guitar in a worcester bar, or for myself, but i can't. either way, this song is great. any video featuring matt skiba, awk, paris hilton and barry zito is cool with me

9. david hasselhoff - hooked on a feeling (mark james) (3:36)
um...my judgment is blinded by the video

10. dynamite hack - boyz in the hood (eazy-e) (3:05)
this is the last explanation i have to write. like the others, i wanted to listen to this again before i wrote anything. however, immediately after this ended, end of the road by boyz ii men came on, so my lazy ass is taking it as a sign.

11. new found glory - glory of love (peter cetera and david foster) (3:19)
another band that's probably done too many covers, NFG totally rips this one. most covers in the same vein are suffocatingly ironic, but it wasn't until i heard this one that i realized it. and that's why it's on here. i get a medium-sized whiteboy chubby for all things ironic.

i can't tell if i wanna laugh at this video or have a seizure

12. jeff buckley - hallelujah (leonard cohen) (6:54)
this should be a shoe-in and will probably be on allison's list, but just to be safe, here ya go.

13. postal service - against all odds (phil collins) (4:13)
Allison hates jazz and loves Phil Collins with the force of a thousand Katrina's. PHIL COLLINS SUCKS I CANT BELIEVE HE EVEN WROTE A SONG THATS COVERABLE THANKS POSTAL SERVICE

14. bobby darin - mack the knife (weill and brecht) (3:06)
when sinatra finally got around to this one, he didn't stand a chance.

15. william shatner - rocket man (elton john) (4:53)
always brilliant

16. jimi hendrix - all along the watchtower (bob dylan) (4:02)
why are people still allowed to cover this song? i don't condone violence, but if a few brass knuckles keep this song off limits, i'll make an exception.

17. warren zevon – knockin’ on heaven’s door (bob dylan) (4:05)
the fact that zevon recorded this while staring death in the face makes it that much more powerful.

18. joel mazeika – big pimpin (jay-z) (4:43)
i remember this once in a lifetime performance as if it were happening right now. the sun was setting over our high school baseball field just as the bonfire raged to life. the rock legends of tahanto ripped through their sets, but nobody was even close to warmed up for the pants-shitting awefest that was about to ensue. joel stepped up to the mic, and promptly ripped the goddamn house down. it was unexpected magic...it was blissful mayhem. he gave us a special gift that night, something i haven't held since. i wonder what he's doing now.

*jk i'm cool

Allison's Canada Day Playlist

I. LOVE. CANADA.

My love affair with Canada began last summer when I rode a train from Vancouver to Montreal. Along the way I stopped in Edmonton, Winnipeg (does a 20-minute stopover count?), Toronto, and Ottawa. Then, this past February, one of my best friends from college and I decided a road trip through Halifax, Saint John, and Charlottetown was logical. All in all, I've been to 9/10 Canadian provinces. Over MLK weekend in 2010, we're planning to hit up Newfoundland/Labrador, which is the only one I'm missing!

Things I love about Canada:
- The awesome, insane, most friendly people on the planet
- Beavertail is a delicious treat that will rot your teeth
- The parliament house has a CAT SANCTUARY on the grounds
- How fun it is to say "Vancoooooooouver" and "Quuuuuuuubec"
- They are a strong people who don't believe in plowing their roads.
- The $5 bill (I love this so much that I carry one around in my wallet all the time.)
- There is a place called Mount Allison University (he he he)

I could go on and on, but this is about music and not my retarded ideas of what's fun to do on vacation (look - they also have the world's largest lobster statue!), so here's what I think is a great Canada Day playlist. A proud playlist for a proud people.

O, Canada!
1. The Arcade Fire - Wake Up
2. Japandroids - The Boys Are Leaving Town
3. Death from Above 1979 - Black History Month
4. We Are Wolves - Fight & Kiss
5. Wolf Parade - I'll Believe In Anything
6. The Unicorns - I Was Born a Unicorn
7. Metric - Combat Baby
8. Tokyo Police Club - Tessellate
9. Hot Hot Heat - Oh, Goddamnit
10. Stars - Midnight Coward
11. Broken Social Scene - 7/4 (Shoreline)
12. The New Pornographers - The Bleeding Heart Show

14. Jason Collett - Out of Time
15. Young Galaxy - Outside the City
16. The Stills - Helicopters
17. The Weakerthans - One Great City!

I'm too stupid to figure out how IMEEM works, so I made you some artwork instead. Deal.

Here's the playlist sans barenaked ladies and young galaxy

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOOT!!

Allison and I would like to celebrate Canada Day by honoring our proud neighbors to the North for their wonderful contributions to music! We decided against creating an "Ultimate" Canada Day Playlist because, to be honest, 80 minutes wouldn't be fair.

1. rush - fly by night
2. tokyo police club - be good
3. nomeansno - angel or devil
4. bachman-turner overdrive - takin care of business
5. comeback kid - talk is cheap

Evans Canada Day Playlist

ahhh that feels great after the doom and gloom of The Saddest Songs.
